I earned my Master of Arts degree in Counseling from Denver Seminary. With this unique educational experience, I am understand principles of theology and psychology. My practicum at Shepherd's Gate Counseling Center and internship at Colorado Christian University provided me with a wide range of experiences working with elementary aged children, college students, newly married couples, and military members.
Earlier in my career, my wife and I survived three years as Junior High directors for about 40 youth at our local church. I have worked as a counselor for a group home that houses teenage boys with developmental disabilities and mental illness. I currently work to serve Coloradans with severe mental illness for the State of Colorado.
I have been trained and certified to administer the PREPARE/ENRICH assessment for pre-marital couples wanting some insight into their relationship before getting married. This program also is available for marital couples wanting similar insight into their marriage as well. Find out how this program works here.
I was honored to have spent eight years in the US Army Reserves including a 12 month tour in Iraq and Kuwait. I know the stress involved with being in the military and with deployments. There is hope during these difficult times.
There are many types of counseling styles and no two counselors are exactly alike. It is important and encouraged for potential clients to ask questions regarding a counselor's therapeutic framework and style. Some counseling styles are more direct and guide the session for the client. Other styles are indirect and more client focused. Also, some counseling styles offer homework as a part of therapy in order to maximize the effectiveness of the counseling session.
With that said, I primarily work from cognitive behavioral and strengths based perspectives. It just makes sense to how I see people overcome their struggles. I can show you how your thoughts lead to certain emotions, and then to actions or reactions. Every action has a purpose, mostly to protect ourselves from being hurt by others. I aim to collaborate and work alongside clients, giving you options and letting you take control of what works best for you!
I would describe my approach as warm and caring, while providing confidential services. I can offer biblical principles and perspectives for those who prefer that to be included in therapy. My goal is to teach clients how to counsel themselves when experiencing life difficulties as life is too short to live with anger, frustration, and hurts. Check out the FAQ's for more information.
I like to kick dysfunctional thoughts to the curb where they belong so that we can focus on enjoying life!
I have been married for fourteen wonderful years and have three young children. I am a Denver native and love living in Colorado. I like playing outside with the kids (wearing sunscreen and bug repellent!), taking walks with my wife, and playing Clash of Clans!
I truly enjoy the mental health field and talking about mental health with others. I find that being a counselor is rewarding and I am often challenged by my clients to see the world a little differently each time.
